Cosmetic Dental Services for Discolored Teeth

Cosmetic Dentist Miami, FL

Several cosmetic dental services can be used to get rid of stains and discoloration on teeth. Most people start out life with white teeth that then pick up stains and discoloration over time. Some stains are caused by the things that we consume, while others are caused by aging.

Dentin becomes thinner as a person ages, making the yellow inner layer called the dentin more visible. Habits like using tobacco products can also lead to stains forming on teeth.

Whitening teeth with cosmetic dental services

Many people would like to have a whiter smile. Here are a few of the cosmetic dental services that can be used to transform the color of teeth.

1. Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening treatments involve using whitening chemicals, like hydrogen peroxide or hydrogen carbamide, to remove stains on surfaces of teeth and deep within them. The process involves the dentist covering the patient’s teeth with the bleaching products and allowing them to work on the teeth for up to 90 minutes.

An in-office teeth whitening session can enhance the color of a person’s teeth by up to eight hues. In-office whitening treatments are typically performed using a custom mouth tray that is used to apply the product. The mouth tray ensures that the patient’s teeth are evenly coated with the whitening products, and it prevents them from getting into gum tissues where they can cause irritation. Teeth whitening treatments are effective on most types of stains, like those caused by tobacco products, consumables, and aging.

2. Composite bonding

This is a non-invasive treatment that can be used to cover up stains and discoloration. Dentists typically recommend composite bonding for discolored teeth that cannot be whitened with bleaching products. Discoloration caused by tooth decay, tetracycline antibiotics, and fluorosis cannot be removed with whitening treatments. A dentist's solution for these types of stains is to cover the affected teeth with composite bonding or another restoration. Composite bonding does not require making any permanent alterations to the tooth, so it is often the first treatment recommended for stains that cannot be removed with whitening treatments.

Restoring a tooth with a composite involves roughening its exterior with an etching solution to create a better bond. The composite resin is applied to the tooth and molded as desired to cover up any stains on it. The dentist completes the process by hardening the composite with ultraviolet light.

3. Crowns

Crowns can also cover up discolored teeth. Dentists typically recommend crowns for severely discolored teeth with other issues like tooth decay, since the process requires permanently altering the tooth.

A crown encases that the tooth it is placed on, immediately restoring its appearance. The crown also protects the tooth from bite forces and acids in the mouth.
